Rock and Roll Karaoke and NEW Open Mic (see below)
We, the house band for the Live Rock N Roll Karaoke night at Arlene’s Grocery, subscribe to a theory. That is, that the animation of the performance - along with the execution of the songs, is inextricably tied to the success of the evening. Success in this instance means a packed house for the entire three-hour show, with everyone enjoying themselves fully, and frequently some relishing an unforgettable night.
We take this responsibility seriously and will go to any length (almost) to ensure it, which means we also do not subscribe to other theories. For instance, Paul doesn’t subscribe to the theory that if one wants to play guitar like Angus Young one should be close to five foot tall (Paul has a good 10 or 11 inches on him), just as Mark doesn’t concern himself with not being a tall and lanky Tommy Lee when he’s twirling sticks and catching cymbals (Mark’s probably 8 inches shorter, and has a picture to prove it). When playing 80’s metal tunes Eric doesn’t have to strut onstage with eyeliner, mascara and lipstick as he might have when he was a glam rock god of yesteryear (though he’d probably like to), and can instead content himself with capturing the energy of those days jumping around the stage and blasting out the sonic histrionics of heavy metal guitar (and still posing on occasion). In short, we take our "performing" responsibilities seriously.
About us personally, we’re just a bunch of guys with an undying passion for playing rock n roll, and do so in other gigs outside of Arlene’s. Dan plays bass with the Bomb Squad and has his own indie power pop band Uncle Pumpkin, while Mark most recently toured with Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductee Debbie Harry (of Blondie) and the undeground alternative-metal band Warriorsoul. Paul fronted a band called Mouthful in France and is currently working on a Led Zeppelin tribue band with hard rock drum legend Bobby Rondinelli (of Rainbow and Black Sabbath) and Eric plays in an 80's tribute act Rubix Cube. Dan, Paul and Mark also have a few projects together, including the Greenies, a stripped-down version of the Arlene's karaoke band, and Freed, a Free tribute band with Cactus singer Jimmy Kunes.
We sought to take this Live Rock N Roll Karaoke night OVER THE TOP and create something more animated and high-energy than had previously been done. With the classic spirit of rock n roll embodied in your host/frontman/vox extraordinaire Shane
we feel we're on the right track. Live rock n roll has always been about the performance and the music coming together to forge some kind of alchemy. On Monday nights at from 10PM to 1AM we aspire to becoming alchemists.
